Overview
ChatGPT is OpenAI's consumer AI assistant, launched in November 2022 and now used by hundreds of millions of people each week. It answers questions, writes and edits text, explains and generates code, analyzes files you upload, searches the web with citations, and generates images on request. It runs on the web and as native apps for iOS, Android, macOS and Windows. A free tier covers everyday use; ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo unlocks the newest models, image generation, and higher message limits.
Free tier vs Plus: where the money goes
For everyday tasks such as drafting, summarizing, explaining and light coding, the free tier is already strong and rarely the bottleneck. The gap shows up on harder reasoning, long multi-step problems, large data analysis and image generation, where the Plus models are clearly better and the limits are higher. Against Claude, ChatGPT is more concise out of the box on short tasks but less reliable on very long documents. Against Gemini it has a smaller context window but a more polished app and a far larger ecosystem of extensions and community prompts.

Does ChatGPT train on my conversations?
